My Story

On April 7th 2024, I will be running the Brighton Marathon 2024, which is a 26.2 mile route from city to coast past the iconic sites of Brighton and Hove. Brighton is where I graduated from university in 2017 so it will be amazing to go back and run through the place I once called home. I will be running the marathon on behalf of Dementia UK.

Having worked in the homecare industry for the last 6 years, I have been fortunate enough to see the benefits that full-time, live-in support can offer people living with dementia, however this isn't necessarily what everyone requires.

With someone in the UK developing a form of dementia every 3 minutes, more and more people are impacted by this across the country and often families find it hard to come to terms with the changes in their loved ones and this is where Dementia UK is able to help.

Dementia can be devastating for the individual and for the whole family, and often people are left to cope alone with the ever-changing challenges, but this is where Dementia UK's team of specialist nurses, known as Admiral Nurses, are able to help. They provide essential support and guidance to anyone who has been impacted by dementia and ensure that anyone affected does not have to face this alone. They are there to help people living with dementia stay independent for longer and give them and their families, the confidence to manage their future with dementia.

As of March 2022, Dementia UK had 376 Admiral Nurses in the UK, but with an increasing number of people across the country being affected by dementia in one way or another, more people are contacting the Helpline today than ever before. A donation of £20 can ensure that nurses are able to answer more calls and offer a vital lifeline when people need it most.

This will be my first ever marathon, so it won't be easy, but I appreciate any donation at all and can assure you that this will have an impact on an individual or family somewhere in the UK.

Thank you,

James
